1900 Antique Quincy Illinois GEM Stove & Ranges Double Sided Smaltz Painted Sign

  

Great rare piece of Americana. This sign is double sided and would have hung in what I would call a side walk sign to allow it to swing. The sign mounts in the middle to this frame which is why the holes are there.

It is made of smaltz paint which is crushed glass to allow it to illuminate at night. They did this before the invention of neon to allow it to show up at night. A similar technique is used today with road signs. Technically this has two signs in it because the top part where the blue is, is a metal sign and they are back-to-back in the frame. The bottom part is a solid wood piece.

What is so cool about this sign and the reason for the price is that this would have been used in an old country diner that used this stove to cook off of. Ive been around a lot of advertising and seen a lot of stove signs but Ive never seen anything like this piece before.
