Up for sale is this AUTHENTIC double-sided English pub sign from the " King and Tinker " pub in Enfield, Middlesex. The sign definitely pre-dates 1934, because at that time, the brewery Ind Coope changed their name. The sign is made of wood with polychrome paint decoration showing the "King" knighting the "Tinker".

There are two iron hooks to hang the sign against a wall. The pub name came from an encounter between King James 1st and an itinerant pan mender (or "tinker"). Whilst the King was hunting, he became separated from his courtiers and took refuge in a local alehouse. Whilst there, the King met the tinker and struck up a friendship. Local lore says that the King later knighted the tinker.

As is common with English pub signs and inclement weather, the signs are frequently repainted. Please note the outline or "ghost" image of the King mounted on his horse, which matches the earlier pub sign we located in the Enfield archives. We have also attached a much earlier photograph of the outside of the " King and Tinker " pub, which shows an earlier version of the pub sign to the far left of the image. The pub sign also advertises the brewer Ind Coope.

Originally started in 1708, Ind Coope opened it's brewery in Romford in Essex and later in Burton-Upon-Trent. As can be seen from the images, the pub sign does show some damage to the lower right corner, where some wood is missing. Interestingly, we came across an old image of the sign where the early stages of decay are clearly visible in the lower right corner. Due to England's climate, it can be assumed that this decay eventually led to wood rot and the loss of this lower right corner.

Measuring in at a whopping 40-3/4" tall x 26-3/4" wide x 1 thick, this highly decorative piece is ready for display.
